JOHNSON'S JOURNEY

After six months of Johnson having to perform dialysis for 9 hours each night, 7 days a week, he was blessed to have received a much needed kidney transplant in February 2007.  His wife Kendra was proud to have been his donor.

FUNDRAISING TOTAL FOR 2007

$27,000

JOHNSON AND KENDRA joined Team Diabetes in 2006 to help educate people, raise awareness, and to support the fight against Diabetes.

2006 proved a challenging year for the "John" family. They joined Team Diabetes, hosted many fundraising events, endured kidney failure, started dialysis and still managed to complete 2, 10K runs with Team Diabetes in the December 2006/2007 Honolulu Marathons.  Johnson, Kendra and their daughters Stephanie and Taylor all proudly crossed both finish lines!  They are so proud to have been able to raise over $39,000 in just two years for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

What started out as a small thing Kendra thought she could do as the wife of a diabetic, was to try and raise some funds for The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA).

She heard an interview on her local radio station (HOT 89.9) where she would later come to befriend a woman named Shannon.  3 days after Shannon announced she was pregnant with her third child, her husband Joe came home from a late night hockey game and wasn't feeling well.  Shannon found her husband dead on the bathroom floor, from a diabetic induced heart attack.

Kendra remembers too well, finding Johnson in a diabetic induced coma during the night, and having to call 911 just 4 days after the birth of their second daughter Taylor.  Kendra had 2 police officers, 2 firefighters, and 2 paramedics in her room, trying to revive Johnson, and felt such a compassion for Shannon, that she had to do something about this epidemic. That's when Kendra and Johnson joined Team Diabetes.

We had the great pleasure of meeting Shannon and one of her son's Jake, through many Team Diabetes meetings, and were fortunate to walk 2006, 10km marathon together in Hawaii.

Jake and Stephanie (Hawaii 2006)

Jake sure helped my daughter Stephanie (who was in denial about her dad's dialysis) and he helped her to open up and ask questions, and just talk about what her dad was going through.  It was a very scary time for all of us.  While traveling on the bus, home from the marathon in Hawaii, Jake turned to us all and said "I did this for my DAD"... well... I have tears in my eyes even as I type this, and we all had a good cry then too!  Thank you Jake and Shannon for inspiring us to join Team Diabetes... and for all your love and support!  You guys are amazing!  What a ride!

Kendra and Johnson set up a table at their local Walmart in Barrhaven. Walmart very generously matched - dollar for dollar - all cash donations collected that day! Thank you Walmart!

On Saturday June 30, 2007 Kendra and Johnson sat at a table inside their local Walmart store (Strandherd at Greenbank).

We were hoping that Walmart would match all our cheque and credit card donations as well, unfortunately they were only able to match all our CASH donations.

We still raised $1,200.00 in CASH which Walmart will now turn into $2,400.00.  WAY TO GO WALMART!!!

Saturday's GRAND TOTAL raised for The Canadian Diabetes Association is.... $5,245.00.

Special thanks to Fuel Industries for their VERY generous donation, as well as EEDO Corporation

A special shout out to say thanks to HOT 89.9 Mauler and RUSH who helped plug this event!  You did a great interview and as a result, we had people make a special trip in from Orleans, Hunt Club, Southkeys etc. all because they heard Johnson's interview on the radio!  Way to go HOT 89.9!
